Carazas test at the 4th gathering of

“ the Happy and Creative Frugality ”

Chambéry, France, 2023

Organizers: Collectif de Boue in collaboration with Angèle Keserwany and Laurent Galichet.

Objectives: Sensitize to earthen construction while comprehending the three-phase nature of earth material and its transformation into construction materials

In the context of the 4th gathering of la frugalité heureuse et créative (the Happy and Creative Frugality), a movement built around the Manifesto of the same name, we intervened to conduct workshops and awareness games on earthen construction.

In a very friendly atmosphere, the event took place over three days of visits, meetings, debates, and festivities centered around the construction of a fulfilling future in response to the ecological and climate urgency. Among the workshops we conducted during the event was the Carazas Test, created by Wilfredo Carazas, an architect renowned for his expertise in raw earth materials.

The test offers an interactive experience suitable for individuals of all ages and backgrounds. This activity provides an opportunity for participants to explore the conversion of earth matter into construction materials by manipulating various types of soil. Through practical engagement, participants gain insight into the intricate dynamics of the three primary phases: solid particles, liquid water, and gas-filled pores, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the transformation process.
